Second attempt with BIAB – Pale Ale brewing day
I had some grains left from my
last BIAB so I decided to try a very simple process to try and learn more about using grains. My hope is to get a descent beer from my BIAB to just get the basics.
To keep it all very simple I kept it all on a single ingredient concept:
Mash:
1 kg crushed pale malt
4 litres Brita filtered water – some from the kettle some in room temperature.
After an hour of keep it on very low (started at 68ºc) I realized that I turned
on the wrong hob! Brought the mash up to 70ºc (it reached 55ºc) in 5 minutes, but then took it off the heat and got the grains out after another 45 minutes. I probably completely ruined it again, just like my last BIAB, with the inability to control the temperatures, but I’m hoping for the best.
Wort:
1 litre room temperature Brita water
0 minutes – 150g dextrose + 20g Target hops (1
2.17%)
30 minutes – 20g Target hops (12.17%)
45 minutes – 10g Fuggles hops (3.48%)
60 minutes – into ice bath
Finished wort – 3.5 litres
11g Nottingham Gluten Free yeast
12g dextrose
500ml Brita water (30°c)
Final mix:
Yeast and finished wort mixed in with 5.5 litres of room temperature Brita water.
OG=1030 at 29°c.
Here I panicked again and saw that the OG is much lower than I expected so I added another 100g of dextrose. That haven’t changed the OG. Probably the dextrose will be converted in the fermentation (which was very aggressive).
The final addition of dextrose might we what will ruin the beer and probably should have been added at the beginning of the boil time. From the numbers I got I think that next time it should be 300g dextrose for every 4.5 litres (1 gallon).
Well, that was it, hopefully that beer isn’t ruined. I also raked and added 20g of Cascade hops pallets to the spraymalt and steeping beer I made last time.
