I’ve mentioned in the past several times that I would like to go into all grain brewing, as I’ve been using malt extracts (syrup) so far. I truly believe that all grain is the holy grail of beer making (or maybe holy grain??), allowing the most control, and all you need is o look and some of the more advanced recipes out there to understand that – but I don’t think I can do so!
I’ve been researching as much as possible to try and understand the process and learnt a lot! After fighting many sites to get through their content to a level I can comprehend, I found one that explained best, and seem to have taken that step to all-grain: Home Brew Manual – great information, mainly the “Resources” page. After hours of reading, days of inner debates, and many wish lists of gear and materials, I realized that the space, time and cost of going to all-grain will be too big. I will end up brewing less just due to the need to get the “brewery” all set up every time!
Finally, that means that I won’t be able to make all-grain in my flat, and it took me a while to not beat my self up – and I’m fine with it – I will make great extract beer, even if it’s not the cheapest, most advanced way out there.
Go extract!

Have you looked into Brew in a Bag (BIAB)? That’s how I do all grain and its simpler than the traditional method.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve had a look into it, but from what I understand, you still need to leave the grains to mash before making the wurt in an open container, and with a very actively crawling 7 months old baby, I’m a bit wary about contamination.

You don’t have to worry about contamination for any steps before the boil, because the boil will kill anything off. You just have to worry about proper sanitization after you cool your wort post boil. Now the safety of your baby regarding a different brew setup is an entirely different issue, which of course only you can assess.

I will definitely look into it. might just need to find higher shelves for safety of all babies (crawling or brewing).
